LoG expands Linux capabilities with Emlix

30 May 2008, Olching – DloG GmbH, the market leader in industrial vehicle computing expands their Linux competencies and data terminal offering based on the open source operating system. In collaboration with Emlix GmbH the systems specialists from Olching, DloG GmbH has developed a powerful WLAN driver and WPA model (Wi-Fi Protected Access Supplicant). These open source innovations significantly improve the WLAN connection of warehouse vehicles such as forklifts and stock loading vehicles. This offers DLoG customers not only greater reliability for the long term, but also reduced licensing costs and IT expenses.

Alongside Windows® based solutions, the leading specialist provider DLoG GmbH, Olching also offers industrial data terminals with the open source operating system, Linux. For warehouse and logistics applications, smooth WLAN and roaming WLAN connections play an essential role. To meet these needs, DLoG has optimized a WPA supplicant, with real time WPA to IEEE 802.11i standard and WEP, to ensure reliable high speed WLAN roaming. With a scan and creation of network access points in the system, an optimal connection can be maintained when warehouse and logistics vehicles move about at high speeds and rapidly changing network connections must be wirelessly created at different access points. In this way, the network search and connection times can be cut, while data transfer reliability and user friendliness can be improved.

All in all, DLoG’s Linux based data terminal solutions enable flexible integration to existing IT infrastructure, high speed roaming between WLAN cells and reduced boot-up time. The source code to all components is freely available. The WLAN infrastructure within the Linux system is highly modular and thus flexibly customizable. Together, these factors ensure future system viability and security in long term investment. Considering the total cost of ownership, open source systems offer much better value over other operating systems.

“The latest developments have made it clear that we will continue to invest in expanding our company’s Linux capabilities. The modular, open source Linux environment opens us and our users to the flexibility which often is essential in trade and intra-logistics applications, while allowing us to implement cost effective, customer and application specific solutions”, explained Hans-Peter Nüdling, CEO DLoG GmbH.
