OSBA 2009 - Winners & Impressions

Open Source Business Foundation awarded 75,000 Euros in prize money

Nuremberg, 29 January 2009 + + + The Open Source Business Foundation eV (www.osbf.de), the European open source industry network headquartered in Nuremberg, celebrated two first place OSBA winners. Oxid eSales AG (www.oxid-esales.com) and Sopera GmbH (www.sopera.de) shared 65,000 Euros of prize money, and snowflake productions GmbH (www.snowflake.ch) took third place to win 10,000 Euros.

The OSBA is Europe’s largest business plan competition focused on Open Source innovations. Award winners and finalists were received by the City of Nuremberg at the historic town hall during the Open Source Meets Business Conference (OSMB) on 28 January, 2009.

Richard Seibt, OSBF Chair and adjudication panel member, was impressed by the high caliber nominations: “We couldn’t help but award both Oxide Sales and Sopera first place. The panel of 17 judges assessed all nominees across eight unevenly weighted criteria, and still the two companies achieved identical scores – to the decimal point.”

Freiburg based Oxid eSales AG impressed the OSBA panel of judges with their partner program and community managed open source shop software, developed in October 2008. A stand out feature was their community platform’s ability to support open source add-on modules and customer solutions.

Bonn based Sopera GmbH on the other hand, won acclaim for their SOA platform in their customer offer of vendor neutrality and future security. Based on a SOA runtime framework and other open source technologies, Sopera also offers user support.

Third place was won by Snowflake Productions GmbH, a Swiss company from Zurich with Todoyu, a web based open source project and task management software designed for service providers. Other OSBA finalists included Calvet Villa & Arriaga Consulting and Project-Open from Spain, Go Mobile IT from Austria, Agile42, Ifu Hamburg, Kingmedia Websolutions, Matrix Technology and Uib from Germany. All OSBA participants received a complementary year’s membership with the OSBF inclusive of all benefits such as free business coaching.

Microsoft and Sparkasse Nuremberg sponsored the Open Source Business Award 2009 as gold and silver sponsors respectively.
